* No-Confidence Motion against Sri Lanka Prime Minister handed over to Speaker

Mar 21, Colombo: A No-Confidence Motion against Sri Lanka's Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has been submitted on Wednesday to the Speaker of parliament Karu Jayasuriya by the Joint Opposition, the opposition group of parliamentarians led by former president Mahinda Rajapaksa.

MP Shehan Semasinghe, representing the joint opposition team, confirmed to the BBC that the no-confidence motion was handed over to the Speaker, Karu Jayasuriya.

The no-confidence motion against the Premier has been signed by 51 joint opposition MPs, three deputy ministers of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and another MP. State Minister TB Ekanayake, Deputy Ministers Nishantha Mutuhettigama and Susantha Punchi Nilame and Parliamentarian Cader Mastan representing the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) have signed the no confidence motion.

It is reported that 55 MPs of the 225-member parliament have signed the no-confidence motion.

Although the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa had not signed it, the joint opposition group said that the no confidence motion was handed over to the Speaker under his direction.
