* Sri Lanka Child authority receives over 1,500 complaints of child abuse in first two months of this year

Mar 13, Colombo: The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) of Sri Lanka says it has received over 1,500 complaints in the first two months of this year.

According to the officials, the National Child Protection Authority has commenced investigations into 1,532 child abuse cases including physical, mental, and sexual abuse and neglect during the first two months of this year. Of them, the highest number of complaints - 364 - have been received on physical and psychological cruelty to children.

There were 241 complaints pertaining to not providing compulsory education 95 cases of child negligence under the Child and Youth Ordinance.

There have been 56 complaints of child labor, 58 61 cases of grave sexual abuse, 58 cases of sexual harassment and 50 complaints of rape.

The highest number of complaints have been reported from Gampaha, Colombo, Kalutara, Kurunegala, Ratnapura and Puttalam districts, and a number of reports have been received from Jaffna, Mannar, Mullaitivu, Batticaloa and Kilinochchi districts.

The National Child Protection Authority has received these complaints via 1929 child helpline and the authority has launched investigations into every complaint. The special police investigation unit of the NCPA is coordinating the investigations with the respective police stations.

Some of the complaints have also been directed to Department of Labor.

The NCPA says the authority is working towards imposing maximum penalties on the offenders while conducting awareness program centering the schools and the community to prevent child abuse.

The NCPA requests the public to inform the nearest police station or the 1929 Sri Lanka child service about the violence against any child in any part of the country.
