Mar 11, Colombo: Sri Lanka Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says the Police is instructed to expedite legal actions against those who were responsible for attacks against Muslim community in Kandy.

He made this comment while attending a religious ceremony in Sedawatta Weragoda Rajamaha Viharaya in Wellampitiya today

Addressing the gathering, the Premier said the violence in Kandy started due to a clash between a lorry driver and three drunken Muslim youths.

He said that instructions were given to the police to speed up the legal action against the attackers. The Attorney general was also instructed to expedite this process.

The Premier said this wasn't an isolated incident. Many feared that violence occurred due to the clash between the lorry driver and Muslim youth could be spread throughout the country. However, such a disaster did not take place, he noted.

Even after 30 years of civil war, the peace and harmony between the communities is still not satisfactory, he said. However, as Sri Lankans we have to endure peaceful coexistence between all nationalities.

"Problems between various factions should not end with violence. Violence will damage the future of our nation. We saw the damage that hindered our future during the 30 years of civil War. During the last 2-3 years peaceful political, economic and social situations have been restored with great difficulty," he said.

The Premier said that the situation will be turned into a bad condition if these problems are not dealt with.

Constructions of the hostel for Buddhist Monks at Sedawatta Weragoda Rajamaha Viharaya were launched under the patronage of Prime Minister today. Building of a golden fence around the Bodhi Tree at the temple was also commenced under the patronage of Prime Minister.
