* Case against former president over using public buses for election campaign fixed for trial on May 15

Mar 09, Colombo: The Colombo Commercial High Court has ordered to hear the case filed by the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) against former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and several others on May 15.

The SLTB has filed the lawsuit in the Colombo Commercial High Court against the United People's Freedom alliance members of the presidential election committee claiming a sum of Rs. 142 million for the buses used for the former president Mahinda Rajapaksa's election campaign.

When the case was called today before the Colombo Commercial High Court judge Ruwan Fernando today (09), the court accepted the revised response submitted by the defense and postponed the case to 15th May.

The SLTB complaint named UPFA election committee members including the former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, Ministers Susil Premajayantha, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, Amal Senadhilankara, and Gamini Senarath, as respondents. Later the SLTB amended the plaint to remove Ministers Susil Premajayantha and Anura Priyadarshana Yapa.

According to the complaint the buses of the Sri Lanka Transport Board have been provided for public participation at the former president's political rallies for the January 8th presidential election and the party owes the SLTB Rs. 192.5 million. Only Rs. 50 Million has been paid as an advance.

A claim has been sent to the former General Secretary of the UPFA Susil Premajayantha requesting the payment of Rs. 142.5 million on account of unsettled dues but the party UPFA has not taken any action to settle the outstanding payment.
