* List of local government members will be gazetted today
Fri, Mar 9, 2018, 09:36 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Mar 09, Colombo: The gazette notification on the list of members elected to the local government bodies at the elections on February 10 will be issued today, the Chairman of the National Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya said.

Accordingly, the local government list will be gazetted with 25 percent women's representation.

According to the Elections Commission Chairman, the number of members elected to the Local Government Election is 8,690, and at divisional level 535 women have been selected for the local governments.

Therefore, 1,991 women are to be named through additional lists.

Meanwhile, 15 local councils in the Northern and Eastern Provinces are unable to meet the 25 percent women representation requirement. The Commission says the high number of political parties contested for those councils at the election was the reason.

However, the Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Faizer Mustapha recently announced that local government bodies will be established on the 20th.
