* Minister warns of legal action against improper waste discharge in Colombo

Mar 03, Colombo: Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Faizer Mustapha says he has instructed police to take legal action against heads of private institutions if they improperly discharge waste.

The Minister said this while joining a waste management program with the participation of Environmental Police, Public Health Officers of Colombo Municipal Council, and officials of private sector organizations involved in waste management and the officials of Colombo Municipal Council.

The Minister inspected places in the Colombo District where the waste has been discharged improperly.

He also held discussions with the officials who are involved with waste management.

Waste management activities have been handed over to the Ministry of Local Government and its affiliated Municipal Councils, Urban Councils and Pradeshiya Sabhas since 1 January 2018.
