* Four police officers arrested for stealing a Valampuri conch shell from the thieves

Mar 02, Colombo: Four police officers including a sub inspector have been arrested for stealing a Rs. 10 million worth Valampuri conch shell from a group of thieves who were arrested for illegal possession of the priced conch shell.

Hikkaduwa Police arrested four people this afternoon for possessing the valued conch shell while they were waiting for a buyer near the Hikkaduwa market.

The police officers who conducted the raid have obtained the Valampuri from the suspects and released them.

However, following the information reported to the Assistant Superintendent of Police in Galle, an investigation was conducted and the four police officers including a sub inspector and three constables who were in the possession of the Valampuri were arrested.

The suspects will be produced in the court tomorrow.

The Valampuri shell with a left-opening is extremely rare and is considered sacred and very auspicious to use in Hindu religious rituals.
