Sun, Jun 24, 2018, 10:02 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

June 24, Colombo: Sri Lanka Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says that the country will be taken forward by getting foreign investments and generating new income avenues.

Addressing a function in Galle today the Premier said the debt burden will not be left to the future. With the investment from the China Merchant Company the debt burden of the country has been reduced by one billion dollars.

He said the Chinese Company will develop Hambantota Port and talks are being held with India about utilizing the Mattala International Airport.

The Premier expressed these views at an event held to declare open a new three storied office building constructed for Divithura Divisional Secretariat in Galle Weliwitiya, at a cost of 40 million rupees.

The Premier also handed over compensation of more than 70 million rupees to 1,325 people who were affected by floods in May last year.

Participating in a discussion with local officials, the Prime Minister said steps will be taken to develop Galle as a major tourist destination according to a systematic plan.

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe also stressed that the government has taken steps to give priority to the tourism sector in the process of moving Sri Lanka forward as an economically developed country.
