* Senior immigration officer arrested smuggling gold fined Rs. 3 mn

June 23, Colombo: Sri Lanka Customs today conducted the inquest into a gold smuggling attempt by a senior immigration and emigration officer at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake.

The Customs arrested the immigration and emigration officer Friday night at the departure lounge of the airport when he was attempting to take 6 kilograms of gold worth Rs. 36 million out of the airport abetting a passenger arrived from abroad to smuggle the gold stock.

During the investigation conducted by the Deputy Customs Director, Malik Jayalal Perera, the immigration officer was fined Rs. 3 million and the gold stock was confiscated.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the immigration and emigration said that a disciplinary inquiry will be conducted at the departmental level against the officer.
