* Three suspects in Matara jewellery store heist remanded, main suspect killed

June 23, Colombo: The three suspects, who were injured in a shootout with the police during the jewellery store heist in Matara and are currently receiving treatment at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, have been remanded until July 02.

The Galle Chief Magistrate Nishantha Peiris ordered to remand the three suspects after visiting the hospital today (23).

One police officer was killed and two other police officers and two civilians were injured when the fleeing suspects opened fire at the police officers. The three suspects were also injured during the shootout and admitted themselves to the hospital where they were arrested.

The police arrested four suspects yesterday over the incident.

The mastermind of the robbery, a criminal named Chamara Indrajith Jayasundara, who was wanted in several murders and robberies, was arrested yesterday while hiding in a house in Matara following the robbery. However, he was shot and killed by the police when he attempted to hurl a grenade at the police officers who took him to retrieve his clothing and hidden weapons.

An underworld leader named Kosgoda Tharaka and his brother is among the three suspects who are receiving treatment at the Karapitiya Hospital.

Dharmakeerthi Tharaka Perera Wijesekara a.k.a 'Kosgoda Tharaka' is a notorious criminal involved in organized crime and wanted by the police for allegedly killing at least five people and a number of robberies.

Another injured suspect was identified as Dharmakeerthi Maduka Nirmal Perera Wijesekara, the brother of the aforementioned 'Kosgoda Tharaka'.

The third suspect is identified as Irandeniya Athula Kithsiri Kumara, a resident of Gurudewa, Dutuwewa.

All three suspects are receiving treatment at the ICU in Karapitiya Hospital, the police said.
