June 22, Colombo: A Sri Lankan court on Friday granted bail to the extremist Buddhist monk Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero who was convicted and sentenced for six months in prison for threatening the wife of missing journalist Prageeth Ekneligoda.
The Homagama Magistrate court ordered the release of Ven. Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thero pending an appeal against his six-month prison sentence.
Following the sentencing on June 14, an appeal against his sentence was filed and accordingly, the Homagama Magistrate court set the hearing for June 19 but the hearing was postponed for today due to the absence of the Attorney General.
When the petition was called this afternoon, Homagama Magistrate Udesh Ranatunga released the monk on two personal sureties of Rs. 500,000 each. The Magistrate also imposed a travel ban on the Thero.
Homagama Magistrate last month convicted the General Secretary of Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) organization on two counts of harassing and intimidating Sandya Eknaligoda in the Homagama Magistrate Court premises.
The Magistrate sentenced the hardline Thero to two six-month terms of imprisonment to be served concurrently.
The Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero was charged over statements he made during a court hearing in January 2016 when the habeas corpus case with regard to the disappearance of journalist Prageeth Ekneligoda was heard in the Homagama Magistrate court.
