* Sri Lanka President vows not to allow a dictatorship in the country again
Thu, Jun 21, 2018, 09:41 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

June 21, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena today responding to a call made by a Buddhist leader for a 'Hitler' type dictator, vowed not to allow the country to return to the dictatorship that was emerging before January 2015.

"On January 8, 2015, the people of this country contributed to the change in the administration against the emerging dictatorship in the country," the President said in a hard hitting speech.

Addressing an event held in Nikaweratiya this morning (21), the President said those who forgot that experience will once again appeal for a dictatorial regime in the country but he will not allow the collapse of the expectations people of this country placed on January 8, 2015.

Ending the era of the dictatorship this government ensured the freedom and democracy the people of this country requested not "by just 100 percent but by 200 percent", the President said adding that those who act to convince this government as a "weak and lifeless administration should understand that it is a journey with democracy and freedom.

"On the 8th of January 2015 the people of this country did not make me president to request food. It's not for jobs. The people of this country made a transformation, made a change requesting democracy and freedom, freedom and right to live without fear. Today, they have been strengthened by 100 percent," he said.

"Today, you know how that democracy and freedom is abused. That is why some say that this government is not doing enough. Some people say that I am not a stronger leader. I saw several Bikkhus in the media yesterday demanding that the country needs a dictator. Forgive me venerable Thero, I respect the Maha Sangha as a strong Buddhist. But if you are preaching anywhere, the country needs a dictator, then the country has lost its way. The pretense of a dictator was felt to some extent by the people of this country before 2015. It's forgotten. Therefore, they ask for the dictators," the President said referring to a call made by a chief monk of Asgiri Chapter for a 'Hitler'.

President Sirisena further stressed that although some act to abuse the freedom and the democracy they have received to attack the government, this government, bringing all the educated, intellectuals and everyone who respect the democracy will go forward strengthening the necessary political and development path for the country.

Recalling that the freedom and democracy established in the country in the last three and half years brought the distanced country closer to the international community as well as securing several victories to the country, the President said no one should contribute to reverse that victory the country won.

The President today vested the 81st model village under the "Semata Sevana Yali Pibidena Uda Gammana" program Weherapura, Nikaweratiya, in the Kurunegala District with the public.

The fully-pledged model village of Weherapura in 6.67 acres of land consists of 32 houses and all infrastructure facilities including water and electricity facilities, internal road network and access road.

The President symbolically handed over the keys to the houses to beneficiaries and engaged in an observation tour in the village. He also inspected the herb garden and planted a Na tree to symbolize his visit.

Minister Sajith Premadasa, Gamini Jayawickrama Perera, Deputy Minister Indika Bandaranayake, North Western Province Chief Minister Dharmasiri Dassanayake and a large number of political representatives of the province, including the Secretary to the Ministry of Housing and Construction, were also present on the occasion.
