June 21, Colombo: Sri Lanka's nationwide inflation in May 2018 determined under the National Consumer Price Index (NCPI) ascended to 2.1 percent from 1.6 percent recorded in April 2018 on an year-on-year basis, the Department of Census and Statistics reported Thursday.
The NCPI for all items for the month of May 2018 marginally increased by 1.1 percent to 124.3 from 122.9 in April 2018. The increase in the index point was due to the expenditure value increase of food items by 0.55% and non‐food items by 0.61% respectively.
Year on Year inflation of food group has marginally increased in May 2018 while that of non‐food group has increased from 3.0% to 3.8% during the month.
On year on year basis, contribution of food commodities to inflation was -0.02 percent in May 2018 and contribution of non-food items was 2.05 percent.
The moving average inflation for the month of May 2018 is 5.7 percent. The corresponding rate for April 2018 was 6.1percent.
