Tue, Jun 19, 2018, 08:13 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

June 19, Colombo: Plans are afoot to start the construction of the first harbor of the four multipurpose fishing ports to be constructed with the Korean assistance within the next few months, State Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Dilip Wedaarachchi said.

A high-level delegation of top officials of the South Korean Ministry of Fisheries and Oceans met with State Minister Dilip Wedaarachchi today to discuss the plans to commence the construction of the first of the four multi-purpose fishery harbors.

The discussion focused on the ongoing feasibility study as well as on the steps to be taken to promptly initiate the construction of the harbors.

Accordingly, the Korean officials noted that the construction of one of the two multipurpose harbors, Udappuwa or Delft could be commenced within the first few months of 2019.

The Korean assistance to construct the four multipurpose fishery harbors in Chalai, Delft, Madakal and Udappuwa in Chilaw was a result of Minister Wedaarachchi's visit to South Korea, the Minister said.

The multipurpose fishery harbors are planned to be established with a view to realizing fisheries, tourism and commercial purposes. The Korean Government has agreed to provide all the technical assistance, plans and concessionary loans for the construction of the harbors.

They have agreed to prepare the feasibility reports necessary for the establishment of the four harbors by their country on a free of charge basis. It was also decided to design the four harbors to ensure a 5m depth to provide access for large vessels. The feasibility studies are expected to be completed in October.

With the construction of these multipurpose fishing ports, a large number of direct and indirect jobs are expected to be created and along with constructions attention has also been focused on infrastructure development in the respective areas.
