Wed, Jun 13, 2018, 09:19 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

June 13, Colombo: A Sri Lankan court today further remanded the former Chief of Staff of Army, retired Major General Amal Karunasekara, who was in remand custody following arrest for the abduction, and assault of journalist Keith Noyahr in May 2008.

Mount Lavinia Additional Magistrate, Lochana Abeywickrama remanded the former chief of the Army Intelligence till June 26 when the case was called today.

At the trial, Senior State Counsel Lakmini Kirihagama objecting that Maj. Gen. Amal Karunasekara is in remand custody in the military hospital said a report from the Judicial Medical Officer in Colombo should be submitted to the court regarding the matter.

State Counsel also requested the court to grant the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) permission to obtain a statement from the suspect during the period from 14th to 26th June.

The Magistrate granted permission for both requests.

The prosecution also informed the Court today that a file containing the documents in the custody of the Inspector Nishantha Silva who was in remand custody in connection with this incident, has been found.

Therefore, the State Counsel requested the court to order the Commissioner of Prisons to inquire into the possession of such a file by the suspect and to obtain information on the persons who visited him. The Magistrate granted permission to state attorney's request.

The state counsel informed the court that the military intelligence heads are unable to provide the information requested for the investigations and requested the court to grant permission to the CID to obtain the information at a closed location.

Accordingly, the Magistrate decided to issue an order to the Military Intelligence Chief to give information to the CID in the official chambers of the Additional Magistrate on the 26th of this month.
