* Chief incumbent of Kataragama Kiri Vehera and another monk injured in shooting, police seize gunmen's vehicle

June 13, Colombo: The vehicle, used by the gunmen to escape after shooting the Chief incumbent of Kataragama Kiri Vehera and another monk last night at the temple, has been taken into custody by the police.

Unidentified gunmen, who came in a vehicle to the Kataragama Kiri Vehera premises have fired at the chief incumbent of the Kataragama Kiri Vehera Rajamaha Viharaya Ven. Kobawaka Damminda Thera and another monk last night at around 11 pm.

The Police Media Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said the vehicle in which the suspects came to the Kiri Vehera Temple has been taken into custody and investigations are being conducted. Police said the suspects had arrived in a Honda SUV with license number UP CAG 8531.

The police said three suspects who arrived in the vehicle were hiding near the temple and shot at the Chief Incumbent and the other monk when they were coming down on the steps from the Temple.

The Chief Incumbent Ven. Kobawaka Dhamminda Thera and the other monk were injured in the shooting and admitted to the Debarawewa Hospital first and later transferred to the Hambantota Hospital for further treatment.

The motive for the shooting or the suspects are not known yet.

Further investigations are being carried out by the Kataragama Police under the supervision of the Superintendent of Police in Tangalle through several reliable information received regarding the suspects.
