* Special island wide police operation makes over 3600 arrests

June 10, Colombo: A special 11-hour police operation launched Saturday night covering all police divisions across the island has made 3,666 arrests for various violations of law, Police Media Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said.

The special police operation under the direction of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundera was carried out between Saturday (09) 9:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. Sunday by all police stations in the country.

Police Spokesman said 17,687 police officers from across the country were deployed for the operation.

The arrested people include drunk drivers, people with open warrants and other suspects involved in various crimes.

According to the Police Spokesman the arrests include 998 suspects with warrants issued for their arrest and 648 motorists on charges of drunk driving.
