Sun, Jun 10, 2018, 11:44 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

June 10, Colombo: A Sri Lankan court remanded the former Chief Executive Officer of South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) Dr. Sameera Senaratne, who was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department for staging a shooting targeting his vehicle.

The Kaduwela Magistrate ordered Dr. Senaratne to be remanded until the 14th of this month.

He was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department on charges of making a false complaint, giving a false statement to the police and conspiring under the firearm ordinance.

Dr. Senaratne was shot at while travelling in his car by two armed men on a motorbike wearing full-face helmets on Chandrika Kumaratunga Mawatha near the SAITM campus in Malabe on 5 February 2017. He escaped the shooting unhurt.

However, police investigations revealed that the shooting was staged to falsely portray a death threat to Dr. Senaratne's life. A former Pradeshiya Sabha member, who is a close friend of Dr. Senaratne has orchestrated the shooting along with a driver of a local government institution.

Earlier the CID arrested former Kaduwela Municipal Councilor Aruna Lakmal Kushantha in connection with the shooting.
