* Karandeniya PS Deputy Chairman shot dead, suspect arrested

June 09, Colombo: Uragasmanhandiya Police has arrested a suspect in the shooting death of Karandeniya Pradeshiya Sabha Deputy Chairman Donald Sampath, police said.

The Police Media unit said the suspect is a 22 year old named Asela Ranasinghe.

The Deputy Chairman of the Karandeniya Pradeshiya Sabha Donald Sampath was gunned down by an unidentified gunman at Uragasmanhandiya, Horakeena area.

The shooting took place at about 10:15 pm on Friday night. The shooting had been carried out by two men on a motorcycle targeting the Deputy Chairman, who was traveling in a van after attending a wedding reception.

The Deputy Chairman has died on the spot. Another person who was traveling in the van has escaped unhurt. The driver of the vehicle also sustained minor injuries.

The Police have found a T-56 live ammunition and 15 empty shells from the location where the deputy Chairman was shot.

The magisterial inquiry was conducted by Elpitiya acting magistrate Ms. Vajira Ponnamperuma and the body has been sent to the Galle-Elpitiya Judicial Medical Officer for further investigations.
