* New Deputy Speaker of Parliament assumes duties

June 06, Colombo: The United National Party (UNP) Moneragala District Parliamentarian J. M. Ananda Kumarasiri today assumed duties as Deputy Speaker and Chairperson of Committees of the Parliament of Sri Lanka.

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya and several UNP MPs were present on the occasion when when Mr. Ananda Kumarasiri assumed duties as the Deputy Speaker.

MP Kumarasiri was elected to the post in a secret ballot held yesterday at the parliament receiving 97 votes out of the 225-member parliament. His opponent, UPFA Gampaha district MP Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle received 53 votes.

The Deputy Speaker post became vacant after former Deputy Speaker, Thilanga Sumathipala resigned on the 25th of May 2018 leaving the government with the "Group of 16" UPFA parliamentarians.

MP Ananda Kumarasiri is a senior Member of Parliament representing Monaragala district from the UNP and was first elected to Parliament in 1986. He has a cumulative legislative service of nearly 9 years.
