* Uva CM surrenders to police over the principal kneeling incident
Tue, Jan 23, 2018, 01:12 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Jan 23, Colombo: Uva Province Chief Minister Chamara Sampath Dassanayake has surrendered to the Badulla Police station this morning through a lawyer, Police Media Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said.

He is to be produced before the Badulla Magistrate's Court today.

The Chief Minister is alleged of humiliating the principal of Tamil Girls School in Badulla by making her kneel before him and reprimanding her for disregarding an order sent by him to admit a student to a school.

The Ceylon Teachers Union demanded the authorities to arrest the Chief Minister for threatening and humiliating the principal.

The Chief Minister yesterday removed himself from the post of Provincial Minister of Education until the investigations on the allegations against him are completed.

President Maithripala Sirisena Monday instructed IGP Pujith Jayasundara to hold an impartial comprehensive inquiry into the complaint lodged by the female principal.

The Human Rights Commission has also begun a probe into the incident.
