* Uva Chief Minister resigns from the post of Provincial Minister of Education

Jan 21, Colombo: Uva Province Chief Minister, Chamara Sampath Dassanayake, who is alleged of humiliating a female principal by making her kneel before him, said he resigned from the post of Provincial Minister of Education with immediate effect.

The Chief Minister has said that he has decide to remove himself from the post of Provincial Minister of Education until the investigations on the allegations against him are completed.

He said the letter of resignation has been forwarded to the Governor of the Uva Province and he has also requested the Inspector General of Police to carry out an immediate investigation into the matter.

It has been alleged that the Chief Minister Chamara had summoned the Principal of the Badulla Tamil Girls' School, Bhavani Ragunath and reprimanded her for disregarding an order sent by him to admit a student to a school. The Chief Minister has allegedly made the principal kneel and apologize to him.

The teachers' trade union, Ceylon Teachers Union yesterday demanded the authorities to arrest the Chief Minister for threatening and humiliating the principal warning that all teachers and principals are ready to launch a strike if the Chief Minister is not arrested.

The Human Rights Commission has meanwhile said that the Commission has begun a probe into the incident.
