* Nepal's Army Chief calls on Sri Lankan President

Jan 19, Colombo: Chief of the Army Staff of the Nepal Army, General Rajendra Chhetri, who is currently visiting Sri Lanka, called on President Maithripala Sirisena at the President's official Residence in Colombo this morning (19).

General Chhetri is currently in Sri Lanka on a goodwill tour at the invitation of his Sri Lankan counterpart Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake.

During the meeting, the President recalling the sound religious, cultural and social relations that have been existing between the two nations, underlined the importance of maintaining the status-quo as friendly South Asian neighbors.

Discussions were held on the role of the armies of the two countries in the nation-building process, how to respond to national disaster situations, and bilateral cooperation for training opportunities.

The Nepali Army Chief, noting that the immediate relief provided by the Sri Lanka Army when the earthquake hit his country recently was at a high level, offered his government's sincere gratitude to the President

The President emphasized the need to further expand the training opportunities and technical know-how between the two countries, especially in handling natural disasters and combating drug trafficking.

Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake and a few senior Nepali military Officers were also present at the meeting with the President.

General Chhetri on Friday (19) had separate courtesy audiences with Secretary to the Ministry of Defense, Kapila Waidyaratne PC and Chief of Defense Staff, Admiral Ravindra C. Wijegunaratne in their offices.

The Nepali COAS also met with the Sri Lanka Navy Commander Vice Admiral Sirimewan Ranasinghe at the Navy Headquarters today. They held discussions on matters of mutual interests and mementos were exchanged symbolizing the goodwill of the two friendly forces in the region.
