* Speaker requests President to table reports of Presidential Commissions in parliament
Wed, Jan 10, 2018, 09:35 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Jan 10, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Speaker of the Parliament Karu Jayasuriya has made a request to President Maithripala Sirisena to table the reports of the Presidential Commissions he has received recently.

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has asked the President yesterday (09) to submit the final report of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) into the Bond Issuance of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka and the report of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry to Inquire and Investigate into Serious Acts of Fraud and Corruption (PRECIFAC).

The final report of the Bond Commission was handed over to the President Sirisena on 27 December. The President has directed the report to the Attorney General on 2nd January instructing him to take immediate action.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe requested the Speaker to immediately convene the Parliament to debate the Bond Commission report and expedite the necessary actions.

Accordingly, the Speaker scheduled the parliament to Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.

However, the party leaders when they met yesterday to decide a date for the debate on the Bond Commission report have raised the question whether a debate should be held when the report is not presented to the parliament yet.

Accordingly, the Speaker last evening has decided to request the President to submit the report to the parliament expeditiously.

The President received the report of the PRECIFAC on 2nd January. The report of the PRECIFAC is said to contain the reports of investigations on 34 cases of serious fraud and corruption that took place during the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa's regime.

President Sirisena by a gazette notification on 10 March 2015 established the Presidential Commission of Inquiry to Inquire and Investigate into Serious Acts of Fraud and Corruption (PRECIFAC) to investigate fraud and corruption as well as the misuse of power that took place during the former president Rajapaksa's term 10 January 2010 to 10th January 2015.
