Jan 09, Colombo: Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has filed a petition In the Supreme Court requesting the apex court declare the rejection of the party's nominations to the Panadura, Thirappane and Weligama local councils unlawful.

SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam filed the petition in the Supreme Court naming the Chairman of the Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya and seven others as respondents.

The petitioner states that the Returning Officers have taken steps to reject the nominations alleging that certain documents in the nomination lists have not been properly certified.

The petitioner says that the decisions taken by the returning officers are illegal and request the Court to order the Election Commission to accept the nominations.

The petitioner also requests the court to issue an interim injunction suspending the elections for the Panadura, Thirappane and Weligama and Pradeshiya Sabhas until the hearing of the petition is concluded.

Meanwhile, the United National Freedom Front has also submitted petition to the Court of Appeals against the rejection of that party's nominations to Buttala and Kinniya Pradeshiya Sabhas. The petition was filed by the Secretary of the United National Freedom Front, Attorney Maithri Gunaratne.
