Feb 24, Colombo: A special four-hour operation launched Saturday morning covering all police divisions across the island has made 2,564 arrests for various violations of law, Police Media Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said.
The special police operation under the direction of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundera was carried out between 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. Saturday by all police stations in the country.
Police Headquarters said 16,256 police officers from across the country were deployed for the operation.
As a result of the operation, 720 people with arrest warrants and 741 suspects wanted for various crimes have been arrested. Another 71 persons have been arrested for illegal possession of alcohol and drugs while 4 were arrested for illegally possessing fire arms without a valid license.
The police also cited 4,735 traffic violations during the island wide operation and arrested 504 drunk drivers.
The emergency operation was carried out on the instructions of the Inspector General of Police in order to prevent crimes and minimize road accidents. Such operations will be carried out regularly throughout the country, the police said.
