Wed, Feb 21, 2018, 10:38 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Feb 21, Colombo: It has been decided to enroll the students of the Medical Faculty of the abolished South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) in the Medical Faculty of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defense University (KDU).

This decision was taken at a meeting held at the Presidential Secretariat under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena this afternoon.

The Attorney General, Vice Chancellor of the Kotelawala Defense University, the Dean of the Kotelawala Defense University Medical Faculty and the Chairman of the University Grants Commission and other officials were present at the discussion.

During the discussion it was further decided to examine the basic qualifications of about 1000 students who were studying medicine at the private medical college and to make the admission accordingly.

Meanwhile, a protest rally was held near the Colombo Fort Railway Station demanding the abolishment of the private medical college.

The nine-member committee appointed by President Maithripala Sirisena to implement the proposed solutions to resolve the issue surrounding the Medical Faculty of SAITM recommended creation of two separate not-for-profit institutions, both in compliance with the Minimum Standards, to absorb all students who were in SAITM's medical program and to start accepting new students from 2019.
