* UNP retains Colombo MC electing first woman mayor for Sri Lankan capital city

Feb 11, Colombo: The United National Party (UNP) retained power in the Colombo Municipal Council securing the highest number of votes in Colombo at the Local Government (LG) Elections.

As a result the UNP Mayor elect Rosy Senanayake will become the first female Mayor of the Sri Lankan capital city.

The UNP obtained a majority of 46 percent with 131,353 votes with 60 council seats while the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) received 21 percent with 60,087 votes securing 23 seats.

The United People's Freedom Alliance came in third securing 12 seats in the Council with 31,421 votes.
