Feb 09, Colombo: Sri Lanka is preparing for the much awaited local government elections tomorrow to elect over 8,000 people's representatives for the localities.
According to the Election Commission, 15,760,867 people are eligible to exercise their franchise to elect 8,356 members out of the 57,219 candidates vying for 340 local government bodies.
Polling will take place for 24 Municipal Councils, 41 Urban Councils and 278 Pradeshiya Sabhas. Members will be elected for 4903 divisions.
The casting of votes will begin at 7.00 a.m. and close at 4.00 p.m. on Saturday at 13,374 polling booths across the island.
There will be 3,084 Supervision Zones and 173,383 public officials will be on election duty and 14,410 vehicles will be used for election purposes.
The votes will be counted at 6823 Counting Centers while the postal votes will be counted at the same time at 3,852 centers.
According to the police headquarters, 65,758 police officers including 4,178 officers of the police Special Task Force (STF) will be deployed for election duties on Saturday. They will be supported by 5,953 members of Civil Defense Force.
Meanwhile, ballot boxes are already being dispatched to the main centers. The Elections Commission said that the ballot papers and ballot boxes will be distributed to senior election officers-In-Charge by early morning today.
