Tue, Feb 6, 2018, 09:01 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Feb 06, Colombo: Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu have accused the Sri Lankan Navy personnel of chasing them back to Indian waters while they were fishing near the Katchatheevu islet this morning.

A fisheries official in Rameswaram has told PTI that over 1500 Fishermen from Rameswaram had ventured into sea in 383 boats yesterday and were fishing near Katchatheevu when Sri Lankan naval personnel came to the spot and drove them away.

Following this, all of them had returned to the shore this morning without a catch, the official said.

He urged the Indian government to intervene and take steps to put an end to the recurring attacks on Indian fishermen and to secure the release of 133 fishermen detained in Sri Lankan jails for poaching in island waters and retrieve the 175 boats Sri Lanka had seized.

Meanwhile, a group of fishermen from Ramanathapuram district staged a demonstration condemning the continuing attacks on the fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy.
