* Professor Bellanwila Wimalarathana Thero passes away

Feb 03, Colombo: The Most Venerable Professor Bellanvila Wimalarathana Thera has passed away on Saturday while being treated at a private hospital in Colombo for injuries suffered following a sudden accident at the Temple.

The Chief Incumbent of the Bellanvila Rajamaha Viharaya and the Chancellor of the Sri Jayewardenepura University received serious injuries when he suffered a fall at the temple premises on Friday.

Following the accident, he was admitted to the Colombo south Teaching Hospital in Kalubowila and later transferred to a private hospital in Colombo. He has suffered a heart failure following a major surgery, his brother Most Venerable Bellanvila Dharmarathan Theros said.

Most Venerable Bellanvila Wimalarathana Thero was 76 years old at the time of his passing.

Prof. Wimalarathana Thero graduated from Vidyalankara University (now Kelaniya University) and later obtained a Ph.D. in 1980 from the University of Lancaster, United Kingdom.

Prior to his appointment to the post of Chancellor, Ven. Thero held the position of Professor, associate professor, lecturer and visiting lecturer at the Sri Jayewardenepura University.

The Thero was also a visiting Professor at the School of Oriental and African Studies University of London.

The body of the late Most Venerable Bellanvila Wimalarathana Thero will be placed at the Bellanvila Rajamaha Viharaya. The funeral ceremony will take place at the Sri Jayewardenepura grounds at 3 pm on Thursday (08).
