* Sri Lanka President, PM agree for a Cabinet reshuffle before New Year - Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam
Mon, Apr 9, 2018, 01:17 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Apr 09, Colombo: United National Party Deputy General Secretary, Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam says that President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe have agreed to make a cabinet reshuffle before the Sinhala and Hindu New Year.

The decision has been reached at the meeting held between the President and Prime Minister along with the United National Party senior ministers on Saturday night.

Minister Kariyawasam said the UNP has requested the President to remove the 15 ministers and the Deputy Speaker, who voted for the no-confidence motion against the Prime Minister, from their posts pointing out that they have no moral right to hold ministerial portfolios after voting against the Prime Minister and the government.

The President in response has said that the Central Committee of the SLFP will meet on Monday (today) and a decision will be taken at the meeting.

Minister Kariyawasam said the no-confidence motion put forward by the UNP back benchers against the 16 SLFP ministers was temporarily suspended since it was not a decision taken by the party, and it has been suggested that if the need arises to bring a no-confidence motion it should be considered by a decision of the Working Committee, the Party's parliamentary group and the United National Front.

The Minister said at the meeting with the President, it was informed that depending on the decision taken by the SLFP Central Committee at today's meeting, the UNP as a party will take a decision to present the no-confidence motion against the SLFP ministers.
