* Former Senior DIG Lalith Jayasinghe arrested for favoring a murder suspect

Sept 25, Colombo: The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of the Police headquarters today arrested former Senior DIG Lalith Jayasinghe of Kahawatta Police Division for concealing evidence against a murder suspect.

Jayasinghe was summoned to the SIU this morning to record a statement over the allegation that the former police officer concealed evidence in favor of the suspects including a former deputy minister who were arrested over a fatal shooting incident in Kahawatta two years ago.

Former Deputy Minister of the previous UPFA government Premalal Jayasekara, Sabaragamuwa Provincial Councilor Aruna Nilantha, Kahawatta Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Vajira Darshana and three others were arrested over the shooting death of an election supporter of the common candidate Maithripala Sirisena during the presidential elections in 2015.

The suspects have been charged in the Ratnapura Provincial High Court on nine counts including murder of Shantha Dodangoda and attempted murder of two others in the shooting while the victims were decorating the venue for an election rally in Kahawatta on January 05, 2015.

The SIU arrested the former senior police officer after questioning him. He is to be produced in the Pelmadulla Magistrate Court.
