* Speaker endorses Provincial Council Amendment Bill, instructs to hold PC elections before January and LG elections before March

Sept 22, Colombo: Sri Lanka parliamentary Speaker Karu Jayasuriya this evening has signed the Provincial Council Elections (Amendment) Bill into law. Speaker's media Office said.

Provincial Council Elections (Amendment) Bill, which seeks to increase women representation in provincial councils to 25 percent, passed in the parliament on Wednesday (September 20th) with a two-third majority.

Earlier, the Speaker summoned the Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Faizer Mustapha and Chairman of the Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya and the Chairman of the Delimitation Commission Asoka Peiris to Parliament to discuss the holding local government and provincial council elections.

Accordingly, the Speaker informed the officials that the government plans to hold provincial council elections before end of January and local government elections before end of March next year and instructed them to take necessary measures.
