* U.S. commends Sri Lanka's national reconciliation and rebuilding efforts

Sept 22, New York: A high-ranking U.S. diplomat has lauded Sri Lanka's efforts for national reconciliation and development and the current government's friendly foreign policy during a meeting with the Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena.

The U.S. Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Ambassador Thomas Shannon met Thursday with the Sri Lankan President on the margins of UN General Assembly in New York City.

Shannon, who is the State Department's third-ranking official, has noted that the Sri Lankan government is now implementing "very positive and friendly" foreign policy, in dealing with the international community and maintaining cordial relationships with the member states in the Asian region

The Undersecretary has praised the Sri Lankan President for being an exemplary leader for other leaders in working with encouraging diplomacy and has assured that the U.S. will continue its support to Sri Lanka, the state radio reported.

Under Secretary Shannon has added that he will start an official tour in Sri Lanka in November.

President Sirisena thanked the US for its unrestrained cooperation extended to Sri Lanka. Recalling the long lasting relationship between the two countries, the President commended the US government for its support extended so far to strengthen national reconciliation and development in the country, especially for the development in north and east in the post war period.

The President said Sri Lanka has been able to maintain neutral foreign policy with enhanced bilateral relations with friendly nations and stressed that Sri Lanka is committed to build peace and harmony in the Indian Ocean region as well.

The President emphasizing that the two major parties of the country are working collectively for the wellbeing of the people and the country, has requested the U.S. to further extend its support to Sri Lanka to overcome the current economic problems.
