Sept 12, Colombo: Sri Lanka Navy Monday arrested 12 fishermen from Tamil Nadu for allegedly breaching the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) and poaching in Sri Lankan waters.
Naval personnel onboard a Fast Attack Craft and SLNS Ranawickrama attached to the Northern Naval Command on routine patrol apprehended the 12 Indian fishermen along with their 2 fishing trawlers for poaching in the Sri Lankan territorial waters about 2 nautical miles North-east of the Kachchativu Island yesterday (11 August 2017).
The arrested fishermen were brought to the naval base SLNS Uththara in Kankasanthurai and the trawler and the fishing gear were taken to SLNS Elara in Karainagar. The 12 Indian fishermen were handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries in Jaffna for onward legal action.
The fishermen were produced in Oorkavalthurai court on Tuesday and they were remanded until September 26.
