Sept 11, Vancouver: A Canadian court today sentenced a Sri Lankan man found guilty of smuggling Tamil migrants to Canada to four years in prison.
A British Columbia Supreme Court judge sentenced Kunarobinson Christhurajah who was found guilty to the offence under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for bringing nearly 500 Sri Lankan Tamils in a rickety cargo ship to Canada in 2010.
However Christhurajah walked free after receiving his prison sentence as the judge has considered the seven years of time served behind bars awaiting trial, the Canadian Press reported.
The MV Sun Sea, a Thai cargo ship modified to accommodate people reached Vancouver in August 2010 with 492 Tamil asylum seekers from Sri Lanka on board.
Justice Catherine Wedge said Christhurajah was himself an asylum seeker aboard the MV Sun Sea and not a mastermind or a leader and that he and his family experienced the same conditions as the other passengers.
A mistrial was declared in Christhurajah's first trial in January when a jury failed to reach a verdict, but he was found guilty by another jury in May.
