* Court finds Lalith Weeratunga and Anusha Palpita guilty in financial misappropriation case

Sept 07, Colombo: A Sri Lankan court Thursday found two high profile state officials of the former government guilty of misusing state money.

Colombo High Court Judge Gihan Kulatunga today (7th) decided that the former President's Secretary Lalith Weeratunga and the former Director General of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission Anusha Palpita were guilty of misappropriating state funds for the reelection campaign of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Accordingly, the Judge said that four charges against the defendants have been proven by the prosecution beyond a reasonable doubt.

The judge sentenced The judge sentenced Lalith Weeratunga and Anusha Palpita each for 1 1/2 years in prison, fined Rs 20 million and ordered to pay Rs 50 million to TRC. .

Weeratunga, who was the Chairman of the TRC during the previous government and Palpita were charged with criminal misappropriation of Rs. 620 million of TRC money from 2014 October 30 to 2015 January 05 for election campaigns of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa.
