* Underworld gang member killed in shootout with police

Oct 23, Colombo: An underworld gang member has been killed in a crossfire between the gang members and the elite Special Task Force (STF) police officers in Divulapitiya area.

One other suspect sustained injuries in the exchange of gunfire while seven others have been arrested.

A group of police STF officers and divisional officers have visited the scene of the incident to carry out a special operation on the information received related to the presence of an armed gang, who were ready to commit a certain crime.

The suspects have opened fire when the officers arrived and the STF officers have returned fire during which several suspect has received injuries.

One of the two critically injured suspects, Aluthapala Cooray has succumbed to his injuries while being taken to hospital. The other was transferred to the Gampaha Hospital after being admitted to the Divulapitiya Hospital.

It is believed that the deceased suspect was a former Navy personnel.

The Police seized the van used by the suspects, several automatic firearms, two pistols, a live hand grenade and a plastic pistol. Police are conducting further investigations.
