* Speaker assures not to sign any legislation that harms Buddhism or any other religion
Mon, Oct 23, 2017, 09:58 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Oct 23, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Speaker Karu Jayasuriya yesterday, assured that he will never sign any legislation that will be detrimental to the country, its people, Buddhism or any other religion.

He said that although various proposals have been submitted by various parties regarding a new constitution, no final draft has yet been prepared, and therefore, attempts to spread dissent with a narrow-angled view should not be made.

Mr. Jayasuriya said while he acts as the Speaker, he would not allow to bring any legislation which is even remotely damaging to Buddhism or any other religion.

Speaking as the Chief Guest at a ceremony organized to mark the centenary of the Catholic Church in Mirigama Sunday, Speaker Jayasuriya said there was no secret draft of the Constitution and the interim report only contains proposals of various parties.

He said the various proposals from the political parties and organizations will be debated before making a draft constitution and the Parliament collectively will decide on what to include. The final draft will be presented to each and every religious leader and it will be finalized only after that.

The Speaker, pointing out that any constitution passed by the Parliament will ultimately be enacted by his signature as the Chairman of the Constitutional Council, pledged to the whole nation that at that time he will act scrupulously and responsibly.

Speaker Jayasuriya reiterating that no legislation will be passed without his signature, requested the people not to be distressed by misinformation on constitutional making when there is no final draft of a new constitution prepared yet.

The Constitutional Assembly will debate the constitutional reforms based on the Interim Report of the Steering Committee from October 30 to November 1.
