* President, PM visit Vavuniya to resolve problems of the public in the North

Oct 21, Colombo: Sri Lanka's President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe today visited Vavuniya in the North to resolve the problems of the public.

The concluding ceremony of the Nila Mehewara - President's People Service- National Programme-2017 was held at Saivapragasa Ladies' College in Vavuniya today (Oct. 21) under the patronage of the President and the Prime Minister.

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MP MA Sumanthiran, TNA Vanni District MPs and provincial councilors were also present at the reception to welcome the President and the Prime Minister.

Nearly 5,000 people in Vavuniya were present at the event.

At the event, the President symbolically handed over 5000, land deeds to the people of the North

The Nila Mehewara - President's People Service- National Programme-2017 was launched in Vavuniya in March this year. For over six months Ministers and Secretaries from time to time visited Vavuniya under the program to provide solutions to the unresolved problems of the people.

The Nila Mehewara Program is organized by the Ministry of Home Affairs, on the instructions of President Sirisena and Prime Minister Wickremesinghe, under the patronage of Home Affairs Minister Vajira Abeygunawardena.

Following the event, President Sirisena visited the family of Vidya, the school girl who was raped and murdered in Jaffna responding to a request made by Vidya’s mother at the occasion.

The President looked into the well-being of the family members of Vidya and assured every support for the family, including the assistance for the education of the elder sister of Vidya.

Vidya's mother expressed her gratitude to the President for his intervention to expedite the relevant legal activities to bring justice.

Ministers Vajira Abeywardena, Rishad Bathiudeen and IGP Pujith Jayasundera also accompanied the President.
