Sat, Oct 21, 2017, 12:30 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Oct 21, Colombo: In celebration of the 72nd UN Day the United Nations in Sri Lanka and the Ministry of Education in partnership with Hatton National Bank, have come together to launch the 'SDG Action Campaign'.

The campaign aims to educate and encourage students from across the country to design and implement a Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) based project in their communities.

In 2015, countries adopted a set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all as part of a new sustainable development agenda. Each goal has specific targets to be achieved over the next 15 years.

According to the UN, for the goals to be reached by 2030, everyone - governments, the private sector, civil society and people needs to do their part.

This 'SDG Action Campaign' will support student-led initiatives towards achieving the SDGs in Sri Lanka by educating students on the SDGs, calling for project proposals and empowering 25 selected school projects across the island with seed funding and mentoring to kick start their sustainability projects.

The campaign, will mobilize Sri Lanka's youth to advocate and work towards the SDGs and in doing so, inspire their communities to work in partnership to build our future and achieve the SDGs for people, planet and prosperity in Sri Lanka.

A press conference will be held at the Ministry of Education, Isurupaya, Battaramulla on Tuesday, 24 October to announce the event.

Minister of Education, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative Ms. Una McCauley, Secretary to the Ministry of Education Sunil Hettiarachchi, UN Communication Group Chair and Country Director, International Labour Organization, Ms. Simrin Singh and Hatton National Bank, Chief Operating Officer, Dilshan Rodrigo will take part in the press conference.
