Fri, Oct 20, 2017, 10:14 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Oct 20, Colombo: The court today ordered a report from the prison authorities on the absence of former Navy Spokesperson Commodore D.K.P. Dassanayake in court.

Dassanayake, who is in remand custody, was not produced in court today when the case against him was taken up for hearing.

Colombo Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne ordered the Superintendent of Prisons to report on reasons for his absence.

When the case was called today, the Magistrate questioned the prison authorities why the suspect is still being held at the Welisara Navy Hospital and not in the prison hospital and ordered the prison authorities to submit a report on the matter.

The Magistrate also issued an order to the Commander of Navy to provide accurate information regarding the former Navy spokesman to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Police.

The CID arrested Dassanayake on July 12 for aiding and abetting the abduction and disappearance of 11 youth in 2008 and 2009.

Five others including three other naval officers were also arrested in March this year in connection with the abduction of the youth including six international school students and five university students.

The court also issued an open warrant against Lt. Col. Prasad Hettiarachchi, who is currently absconding the court.

Meanwhile, D. K. P. Dassanayake and six others were remanded again till the 1st of November.
