* Sri Lanka Railway unions suspend strike scheduled to begin midnight today

Oct 20, Colombo: Following discussions with government officials Railway trade unions have agreed to call off the strike which was to be launched from midnight today (20).

Co-convener of Railway Operations Supervising Officers' Trade Union Lal Ariyaratne said the unions decided to suspend the continuous strike planned to be launched from midnight today demanding to resolve their salary anomalies issue.

The union leader said after discussions with the Deputy Minister of Transport Ashoka Abeysinghe, the issue was referred to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, and the union decided to suspend the strike according to the promise given to resolve the issue.

The Railway unions launched a sudden strike without a prior announcement last week seriously inconveniencing the commuters.

The Railway Department said they incurred a loss if Rs. 17 million due to the day-long strike.
