Oct 08, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Elections Commission is preparing to hold the local government elections in January next year, according to local media reports.

Chairman of the Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya has said that approximately 15.6 million people are eligible to vote for the selection of members for 335 Municipal Councils, Urban Councils and Pradeshiya Sabhas at the election.

He said that the Commission is in contact with the Ministry of Local Government and Provincial Councils to inquire into the multiple-member voting districts system.

Deshapriya said the multi-member electoral system would be the same as before, and according to their representatives, the voters would be able to elect members of different communities.

According to election officials, there are 4900 Divisions for each Local Government Institution. Two members each will be appointed for 165 divisions and three members each are to be appointed to four divisions. Through the two multi-member division system, 330 members and 12 members will be selected.

Information boards will be installed at each polling station to inform the voters on voting according to the multi-member electoral system, officials said.
