* Cabinet nod to expand 1990 ambulance service island wide

Oct 04, Colombo: The Cabinet of Ministers have given their approval to the government to set up an institution named Suwasariya Foundation by an Act of Parliament in order to expand the 1990 ambulance service island wide.

The 1990 free ambulance service currently implemented in the Western and Southern provinces has been a success and the government plans to implement the service in other seven provinces as well.

The emergency ambulance service was set up with the assistance from the Government of India in July 2016.

The agreement between not for profit company GVK EMRI Lanka (Pvt) Ltd, which currently operates the service, and the Ministry of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine expires on 31 December 2017.

Therefore, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as the Minister of National Policies and Economic Affairs has proposed to establish the 1990 Suvaseriya Foundation by a parliament act, to continue operations and administration of the ambulance service, which is fully owned by the government

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the Prime Minister's proposal.
