* Professor Colvin Gunaratne assumes duties as Chairman of Sri Lanka Medical Council

Oct 02, Colombo: Professor Colvin Gunaratne, a veteran medical practitioner assumed duties as the Chairman of Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) today.

Minister of Health and Ingenious Medicine Dr. Rajitha Senaratne appointed Professor Gunaratne as the SLMC Chairman in place of Professor Carlo Fonseka, whose period of service expired on 30th June 2017 after holding office since 2012.

Professor Fonseka, a veteran academic and political activist was appointed as chairman of SLMC in Jan 2012 and his official tenure was supposed to end on December 31, 2016. The Minister extended Professor Fonseka's tenure by another six months.

The tenure of Chairman of Sri Lanka Medical Council is valid for a period of 5 years.
