Oct 01, Colombo: A United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) member of the Western Provincial Council has been arrested for the possession of ammunition for a locally made firearm belonging to a drug dealer in Ratmalana, the Colombo South Anti-Vice Squad said.

According to the police, the PC member Amal Pushpakumara Silva was apprehended on Saturday for possessing 3 rounds of live ammunition for a gun belonging to a powerful drug dealer named "Welle Rathnapala" in the Ratmalana area.

The police say on the information given by the drug dealer's 13-year-old son, the police recovered the firearm hidden in the Ratmalana beach.

The Mount Lavinia Anti-Vice Squad on 26th September arrested 55-year-old Rathnapala during a raid conducted on a tip-off. The police found 31.71 grams of heroin in the possession of the suspect.

When the suspect was produced before the Mount Lavinia Magistrate Court, the court allowed the police to detain the suspect for seven days for questioning.

Information obtained from the suspect during interrogation has led to the hidden weapon and the arrest of UPFA councilor.

Mount Lavinia Anti Vice Squad is conducting further investigations.
