* Sri Lanka military deploys over 2000 troops to provide relief, police cancel leave for officers

Nov 30, Colombo: More than 2000 troops of the three armed forces have been deployed to provide relief to the people affected by the adverse weather that ravaged Sri Lanka's south and the central hills.

A part of the troops have already been deployed to assist relief efforts and the rest will be mobilized if needed, Military Spokesman Major General Roshan Seneviratne said.

The Air Force has stationed 26 teams of 30 airmen at the Air Force Bases at Ratmalana, Anuradhapura and Hingurakgoda.

Meanwhile, the Navy has deployed 30 teams with naval craft and they are already engaged in relief and rescue efforts.

The Navy has already commenced operations to find the missing fishermen and to rescue the fishermen who are endangered by the storm.

The Army has deployed troops in Matara, Agalawatta, Millaniya, Balapitiya and Galle areas, the Military Spokesman said.

Meanwhile, the Law and Order Minister Sagala Ratnayake has decided to cancel the leave for all police officers in order to provide relief to the affected people and for special duties.

Accordingly, the acting Police Chief Chandana Wickramaratne has issued the notice of cancellation of leave of all police officers.

The Minister has also instructed the police to deploy special security patrols to protect the house of the affected people.
