Nov 29, Colombo: The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) recognized Sri Lanka's Army medical contingent in South Sudan at a colorful medal ceremony recently.

A group of 16 Sri Lankan Officers and 50 Other Rank personnel serving in the United Nations Level II Hospital in South Sudan under the UNMISS was presented with the UN medal, after the completion of the 6-month UN assignment, during a ceremony held on Friday (24th) in South Sudan.

According to Army media, Director General, Army Medical Services, Major General Kamal Sumanapala graced the occasion as the Chief Guest representing the Commander of the Army with the concurrence of the UN.

The Sri Lanka Army at the request of the UN, established its first-ever SRIMED Level 2 Hospital in Jonglei state in South Sudan in July 2014, under the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

The hospital is manned entirely by the Sri Lanka Army Medical Corp personnel and provides second line health care to all UN personnel serving there.

Sector Commander (East), Field Administrative Officer, all Contingent Commanders and other medical staff were also present at the ceremony.
